Eyton Gorse

Eyton Gorse is a proper little forest sprawl in the rolling Powys borderlands, just a short drive from Oswestry. It's the sort of place where you can spend a morning wandering between dense stands of gorse and mixed woodland without encountering another soul - which is either brilliant or slightly unnerving depending on your mood.

The main draw here is straightforward: walking. There's no visitor centre, no tearoom, no manicured paths with interpretation boards. You turn up, find a spot to park, and head into the trees. In spring the gorse flowers yellow and smells of coconut, which catches people off guard. Summer brings shade and quieter ground, autumn turns things golden. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, trails meander without obvious direction, and you'll spot the odd bit of wildlife if you're patient - rabbits mostly, and plenty of bird chatter.

It works best for walkers who like self-directed exploring and don't need a schedule. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after forty minutes. History types won't find much to grip them, though the landscape itself tells you you're on proper border country.

Free to access, as far as anyone can tell - there's no gate or booth. Allow two hours if you want a decent walk without rushing. If you're camping at Royal Hill or Seven Oaks just outside Oswestry, this is an easy bolt-on for an afternoon. Don't expect facilities. Bring proper boots.
