Eye Castle

The castle mound at Eye rises abruptly from the flat Suffolk landscape, a proper reminder that this corner of England once mattered militarily. What you're looking at is a Norman motte-and-bailey - basically a steep earthwork with what's left of a keep on top, surrounded by a ditch that's still quite pronounced even after nine centuries of neglect.

History types will spend an hour picking over the details; families with younger kids might manage twenty minutes before boredom sets in, though the climbing itself usually holds their attention. The site sits right in Eye town, so you can combine it with a browse of the shops and a decent lunch at one of the pubs.
