Ewenny Priory Woods

The woodland walk at Ewenny Priory is one of those places where you half-expect to stumble upon monks in the undergrowth - the priory itself stands in ruins at the heart of these ancient woods, and the whole thing feels properly medieval if you let it.

You're walking through broadleaf forest that's been here for centuries, threading past the remains of stone walls and that crumbling priory church. It's not a manicured country estate walk - the paths are loose underfoot in places, roots trip you up if you're not concentrating, and the canopy gets dense enough that even midday feels dim. That's part of its charm, really.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this, especially if you're into ecclesiastical ruins. Kids can manage it without complaint if they're old enough not to need constant paving, though there's nothing particularly thrilling on offer - no zip lines, no adventure playground, just trees and old stone. Budget a solid hour if you're meandering; half that if you're just poking about the priory itself.

It works well as a break from Porthcawl's beaches - you're only ten minutes inland - and if you're staying at Trecco Bay Holiday Park, it's close enough for a morning outing before the weather turns. Late spring is best, when the understory's still visible through all the green. November feels a bit grim. Free to visit, no facilities, and you'll need decent shoes. The sort of place that rewards curiosity rather than delivering guaranteed satisfaction.
