Eversden Wood

The woodland floor squelches underfoot after rain, and that's when Eversden Wood is at its best. It's a proper working forest just south of Cambridge - the Woodland Trust manages it, ancient hardwoods mix with younger plantings, and there's a genuine sense of stepping away from the city despite being barely four miles out.

You're walking through mixed woodland here: oak, ash, hazel coppice that's been cut for centuries. The paths fork and loop around the main block, nothing too demanding, and in spring the place erupts with bluebells - worth timing a visit for if you can manage it. Summer's pleasant enough too, though it can feel a bit thick and humid under the canopy on hot days.

This works best for people who like a quiet walk rather than a destination with views or a café at the end. Families with younger kids might manage 45 minutes to an hour before the novelty wears off; serious walkers will spend a couple of hours. There's no visitor facilities that I'm aware of - bring water, wear decent boots if it's been wet.

If you're based at Guilden Gate Glamping nearby, it's a natural half-morning addition to a Cambridgeshire break. The woodland itself doesn't have the drama of somewhere like the New Forest, but it's real and unpolished. Admission's free and there's usually adequate parking. Go early on weekends if you value peace.
