It's free to wander, which is good value for what amounts to a couple of hours out. Don't expect visitor facilities or a cafe - this is more rugged than that. The real strength of Essington Pools is how it slots into a wider Staffordshire break. Base yourself at Pillaton Hall Farm, six miles south near Stafford, and you've got a proper rural network to explore. This works best as part of a rambling itinerary rather than a standalone destination, but if you're serious about wildlife or canal-side walks, it's absolutely worth the detour.
