Erchless Castle

The ruins of Erchless Castle sit on a rise near Beauly, a proper atmospheric spot if you don't mind clambering through overgrown grounds to get there. What remains is largely 16th-century stonework - enough to give you a sense of the fortress that once dominated this corner of the Highlands, but not so much that you'll spend hours picking through every corner. The castle belonged to the Chisholm clan, and there's a melancholy to these crumbling walls that feels genuine rather than packaged.
