Equation of Time

Head into Wallingford and you'll find a rather clever piece of Victorian engineering that most people walk straight past. The Equation of Time is a sundial of sorts, though calling it that undersells what it actually does. It's a bronze plaque set into the pavement that tracks the difference between solar time and clock time - the bit of physics that means noon isn't always when the sun is directly overhead.

It's the sort of thing that appeals to maths types and anyone with a genuine curiosity about how the world actually works. You won't spend hours here; ten minutes tops, and that's if you're reading the whole explanation and letting it sink in. But it's a proper little moment of pause in the middle of town, the kind of thing that stays with you.

Wallingford itself is a pleasant medieval market town on the Thames, so you're not making a special journey just for this. It works as a stop while you're exploring the town proper - there's the castle to wander round if you've got time, and decent enough pubs for lunch. If you're staying at Rolling Fields Glamping four miles out, it's easily doable as a morning potter about before heading back to the site.

Free, obviously. No hours to worry about since it's outdoors. Just turn up and find it in the town centre. Not a draw in itself, but a genuinely interesting footnote to add to a day out.
