Entrance Marker

The Entrance Marker sits at the threshold of a proper nature reserve in Leicestershire, marking the point where casual walkers become explorers. It's not much to look at - a simple marker indicating you've arrived at something worth protecting - but it does the job of orienting you before you venture into the reserve itself.

This is walker territory, full stop. If you're after a gentle stroll through woodland or meadow with a defined starting point, this works well. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own - there's no playground, no café, no visitor centre facilities. But if you're camping nearby at Nightingales Rustic Camping or Atherstone Stables and fancy a proper walk without the crowds, this is your launchpad.

The real appeal comes once you're past the marker and into the reserve itself. Depending on the season, you'll spot different birds and wildflowers. Spring's particularly good for that. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to make a proper morning of it rather than just popping over for five minutes.

Nearest town is Atherstone, which has the usual facilities if you need anything before or after. The marker's free to access - it's just the gateway - and there's no obvious visiting hours restriction since it's outdoors. If you're staying at one of the local caravan parks and the weather's decent, it's well worth the short drive. Don't expect facilities, just bring a packed lunch and proper boots.
