Enmore Park Golf Club

An 18-hole course on the outskirts of Bridgwater that takes you through Somerset's flatter terrain - nothing dramatic, but solid golf. Fairways are reasonably maintained, the rough can be a bit unkind if you stray, and there's water to catch you out on a handful of holes. It's the kind of place where a decent golfer will score well and a higher handicapper won't feel completely humiliated.

The club suits anyone who actually plays golf rather than just fancies a "quirky activity" for the weekend. Families with non-golfing partners will find it a touch slow-going, though there's usually a decent cafe for those left behind. The course works best in dry conditions - after rain it can get boggy in places, so spring and autumn tend to be better than winter or a wet summer.

You'll want to allow a full four hours minimum, more if you're playing with a slower group ahead. It's a members' club primarily, but visitors can usually get on if you ring ahead - green fees are typical for Somerset, nothing extortionate. The setting's pleasant enough without being spectacular; you're in working countryside rather than rolling hills.

If you're staying at Moorhouse Campsite, which honestly deserves the five-star rating it gets, Enmore Park sits about 40 minutes' drive away - manageable for a day trip. Mill Farm is closer but nowhere near as nice a base. Not essential if golf isn't your thing, but if you play, it's worth the short detour from Bridgwater.
