Emley Moor

The television transmitter tower dominates the skyline long before you reach it. Emley Moor sits at 1,084 feet above sea level on the Pennine moorland between Huddersfield and Sheffield, and the 1,084-foot steel lattice mast is visible for miles around - a brilliant white spike that locals use as a navigation reference. You can't climb the tower itself, but the surrounding moorland is proper walking territory with cracking views across South Yorkshire.

This is a straightforward hill walk rather than a tourist attraction with facilities. Park near the tower and you get immediate access to open moorland that stretches towards Holmfirth. The exposed plateau can be windy and wet, especially in winter, so come prepared. On clear days you'll see right across to the Peak District. The real draw here is the sense of height and the panorama - it's not a dramatic landscape, but it is genuinely expansive.

Historically, the original tower was famously rebuilt in 1971 after an icing incident brought it down in 1969, which makes it something of a Yorkshire engineering oddity. It's the sort of place walkers and moor enthusiasts return to rather than bucket-list tourists.

The nearest camping bases are Holme Valley and Ingfield Farm, both within 4.5 miles, though honestly this works best as a half-day outing from Sheffield itself. Allow two to three hours for a proper walk around the summit area. Go midweek in settled weather if you want solitude.
