Emberton Country Park

The lake at Emberton is the real draw here - a proper working gravel pit that's been landscaped into something genuinely pleasant. You get a decent walk around it, water birds pottering about, and open grassland that doesn't feel manicured to death. The whole thing takes about an hour if you're not in a rush, longer if you stop to actually look at things.

It's ideal for families who've got restless legs, walkers after a gentle loop rather than anything ambitious, and birdwatchers who won't mind sharing space with dog walkers and the occasional fisherman. There's a visitor centre somewhere in the middle of the park - facilities are the usual park offering, nothing fancy but functional.

Access is free, which is the main reason to slot it into a Buckinghamshire break. You're barely ten minutes from Olney, so it works as a morning stop if you're exploring that way, or a leg-stretch break on the drive through. Pair it with Ekeney House Campsite if you're camping nearby - it's close enough that you could do the park as an evening walk without wrestling with the car.

Best visited midweek if you can swing it. Weekends bring the local crowd out in force and the car park gets tight. Nothing wrong with that necessarily, but the place has more breathing room when it's quieter. The lake itself is the only real feature worth mentioning - once you've walked round it, you're done.
