The Embankment Splash Park sits alongside the River Nene just outside Northampton, a low-key nature reserve that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a quiet wander. It's essentially a stretch of managed riverbank with a small splash area - nothing fancy, but genuinely useful if you've got restless kids and want somewhere to let them burn energy without driving into town.

Water play is the main draw here. The splash park itself is modest - shallow pools designed for younger children, the kind where you're not worried about deep water but they still get properly wet. The surrounding reserve has paths that follow the river, so you can tie it into a proper walk if you've time. Birdwatchers occasionally show up, though don't expect anything remarkable. It's more about a gentle riverside stroll than serious wildlife spotting.

Honestly, this works best as a 90-minute stop rather than a full afternoon visit. Fine for families staying at nearby Sywell Country Park or Grendon Lakes - both excellent bases for the area - but you wouldn't travel far out of your way for it alone. Combine it with Overstone Lakes or another local attraction for a full day out.

The reserve is free and accessible during daylight hours. Summer's obviously the sensible time to visit when the splash park's worth using, though even then go on a weekday if you can - weekends get crowded with local families.
