Ely Cathedral Centre

The cathedral dominates Ely's skyline from miles away - that massive stone octagon tower is visible across the Fens before you've even arrived in town. Walking into the cathedral itself is properly striking. The scale of the interior, the soaring columns, the light pouring through stained glass - it catches you off guard every time, even if you're not particularly religious.

The Centre sits right beside the main cathedral building and functions as a visitor facility with exhibitions about the cathedral's 900-year history and the wider story of Ely itself. You'll get proper context about how this place became such a powerhouse in medieval England. The exhibitions aren't flashy but they're informative if you've got an hour to spare. Kids can get restless if they're not cathedral-focused, but there's enough interactive stuff to keep them engaged for a bit.

Ely Cathedral itself is free to enter, though donations are encouraged. The Centre may have a small entrance fee - worth checking before you visit. Allow two to three hours if you want to do both the cathedral exploration and the Centre properly. Photography inside is sometimes restricted, so check the rules on arrival.

It's perfectly positioned for a Cambridgeshire base at Heatherbield Lodge or Hatters Meadows - both within easy distance - and makes a solid half-day outing. Combine it with a walk around Ely's cathedral quarter and you've got an afternoon sorted. The surrounding Fens landscape is bleak and lovely in equal measure.
