Elvis Rock

There's a large rock formation along the Ceredigion coast near Aberystwyth that's been painted bright red and christened Elvis Rock. It's exactly the sort of oddball roadside attraction that shouldn't work but absolutely does - a bit daft, impossible to miss, and genuinely memorable.

You can spot it from the coastal path or drive close enough for a decent look. The rock itself isn't massive, but the red paint makes it properly stand out against the grey Welsh stone and sea. Some people find it brilliant; others reckon it's a bit naff. Either way, it takes ten minutes maximum to have a look and take a photo.

The real appeal is that it fits perfectly into a coastal walk around Aberystwyth. You're not travelling miles out of your way - it's right there on the path if you're exploring the shoreline anyway. Families with younger kids who get bored by earnest history might actually enjoy the sheer silliness of it. Older walkers doing the longer coastal routes will pass it without much fuss.

If you're camping at Forester's Retreat, Tyn Ffordd Fach, or one of the other sites nearby, Elvis Rock is a pleasant fifteen-minute detour on a coastal wander rather than a destination in itself. Free to view, obviously. Don't expect facilities or explanations - it's just a painted rock with attitude. Visit when the weather's decent enough for a proper coastal walk; that's when it earns its place in your day.
