Elvaston Castle Country Park

The first thing that hits you at Elvaston Castle is how much space there is. The estate sprawls across Derbyshire countryside just outside Derby, with formal gardens that actually feel grand rather than cramped. You're looking at Victorian landscaping done properly - the sort of gardens that took serious money and even more stubbornness to maintain.

The castle itself is a Victorian Gothic confection, all crenellations and theatrical stonework. It's not Blenheim, but it doesn't pretend to be. What works here is the grounds. There's a proper lake, tree-lined avenues that stretch for what feels like miles, and enough open parkland to let kids burn off energy without you losing sight of them. The formal gardens near the house have that satisfying geometric precision - rows of clipped yew, geometric beds, the works.

Historically minded visitors will get something out of it, but this is really a place to walk. A good three hours minimum if you're taking it seriously, though you can do a shorter loop in ninety minutes. It's free to wander the grounds, which is brilliant value. The house itself has variable opening depending on the season and special events, so check ahead if you want to go inside.

Staying at Hill Farm Camping just four miles away makes sense - you can do Elvaston as part of a wider Derbyshire ramble without the faff of constant drives. It's proper walking country around here. Go in spring when the rhododendrons are out, or autumn when you've got the trees turning and fewer people clogging up the avenues.
