Elrick Country Park

The woodland trails at Elrick Country Park wind through proper old-growth forest north of Aberdeen, giving you that feeling of being miles from anywhere when you're really only 20 minutes from the city. There's a decent network of paths - some gentle loops that take an hour or so, others that climb higher and take a bit more effort. You'll spot native trees, a burn that's worth following, and if you're lucky enough to visit in spring, banks of bluebells that make the walk genuinely worthwhile. The paths are well-maintained and fairly dry underfoot even after rain, which is saying something in Aberdeenshire.

This is proper walking territory. Families with young kids will manage the shorter loops easily, though there's not much to stop and play at - it's the woodland itself that's the draw. Dog walkers love it, and anyone after a proper leg-stretch before heading back towards Kingswells will find it far less crowded than the main parks. Worth allowing 90 minutes if you want to explore without rushing.

If you're staying at Deeside Holiday Park or Hillhead Caravan Park, both within six miles, Elrick makes a good morning before hitting the bigger attractions. It won't take your whole day, but it's the kind of place that clears your head and justifies the drive. Free admission and no fussing about with entry times - just turn up and walk. Bring decent boots though, especially in winter.
