Elmdon Coppice

A proper woodland walk without the crowds you'd get at places closer to Birmingham. Elmdon Coppice sits just outside Coventry and feels genuinely tucked away - you won't find tourist signage or gift shops here, just trees and paths that actually feel like yours alone.

The coppice is ancient woodland, the sort of place where you notice things. Bluebells if you time it right in spring, decent bird life year-round, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Warwickshire in the first place. It's small enough that you can work through it in an hour without rushing, but big enough that you won't feel hemmed in.

This works best for walkers who know what they want from a wood - no playground, no cafe, no facilities to speak of. Families with older kids will appreciate it; those after an easy push-chair route should look elsewhere. The paths are muddy in winter and require proper boots rather often, so pick your season.

If you're staying at Somers Wood Caravan Park nearby, this makes an easy morning or evening venture. Gate Farm, just outside Coventry proper, is equally close and saves you the drive. Both are proper base camps for exploring the Warwickshire countryside without roughing it completely.

Free to access, naturally. Go early if you want solitude, though you're unlikely to find crowds regardless.
