Ellenborough Park East

The wetland at Ellenborough Park East sprawls across Somerset's coastal plain just outside Burnham-on-Sea, and it's genuinely worth the detour if you're staying at any of the caravan parks dotted around the area. This is proper birdwatching territory - you'll see redshanks, lapwings, and if you're lucky, spoonbills picking through the shallow pools. The reserve itself is understated, which works in its favour. No fancy visitor centres or gift shops, just observation points and footpaths threading through reedbeds and wet grassland.

It's the kind of place that demands patience. Arrive at dawn or dusk and you might spot something genuinely special. Midday visits? Less rewarding, if we're honest. The landscape won't knock you sideways - it's flat, open, and quietly atmospheric rather than dramatic. History buffs will appreciate that you're walking through land shaped by centuries of wetland management and peat extraction.

Walkers get the most from this reserve. You can work up a proper circuit and genuinely feel like you've seen the Somerset Levels from ground level. Kids might find it slow unless they're already into birds and insects - a couple of hours is usually enough. The nearby holiday parks - Channel View, Warren Farm, Golden Sands and the rest - all sit within easy striking distance, making this ideal for a morning outing before heading to Brean Theme Park or the beach at Burnham-on-Sea itself.
