Elemental

You walk into Elemental expecting another white-cube gallery space, and instead find yourself in front of something that actually makes you stop. It's a contemporary art gallery in Somerset that takes the elemental forces - earth, water, fire, air - as its organizing principle, and the exhibitions rotate around these themes rather than artist surveys or chronological nonsense.

The space itself is the draw for me. Located near Bristol, it's become a proper destination for people serious about contemporary work without the pretension you'd get in a major city institution. The installations are thoughtful; I've seen pieces that make you question what you're looking at rather than just hang there being decorative. Whether it's sculpture, video, or mixed media, there's a real curatorial eye at work.

It's not a half-hour stop. You want to give it a good hour, minimum, especially if there's a substantial installation piece on. The Somerset Glamping site nearby makes for a lovely pairing if you're planning a proper art and countryside weekend - you can spend your morning here, then head back to decompress in the fields. Families with older kids interested in contemporary art will find it engaging; younger children might get restless, to be honest.
