Eilrig

The walk up Eilrig isn't long, but it's properly steep in places - think thigh-burning climbs through heather and scree rather than a gentle stroll. You're looking at around 1,500 feet of elevation gain from Fort Augustus, so allow a good three hours if you're not a regular hill walker.

What you get at the top is views across the Great Glen and down towards Loch Ness, which honestly is worth the effort on a clear day. The peak itself is bit windswept and exposed, so bring waterproofs even when the forecast looks promising. This isn't a spectacular mountain by Scottish standards - no dramatic ridges or technical scrambling - but it's a proper workout that doesn't demand a full day of your time.

Walkers who want a quick mountain tick without the commitment of Ben Nevis will find it rewarding. Families with older kids (12+, realistically) can manage it fine if they're used to hills.
