Eaton Socon Cage

A squat stone structure standing alone beside the Great Ouse, the Eaton Socon Cage is one of those local oddities that stops you mid-walk. Built in the 18th century as a lock-up for minor offenders and drunk troublemakers, it's barely bigger than a garden shed - you could practically touch both walls at once. The cage itself is the real attraction here: solid stone, a heavy wooden door, and bars on the small window that really drive home how grim even a night inside must have been.

It's the kind of place that appeals most to history types and anyone doing a proper exploration of St. Neots. You won't spend long here - thirty minutes maximum, including reading the information board - but it's genuinely worth the detour if you're already walking the riverside paths. The Ouse Path runs right past it, which makes for a natural stopping point on a longer ramble.

The cage sits free to view at any time, and there's decent parking near St. Neots town centre just across the way. If you're staying at St. Neots Camping and Caravanning Club Site, you're barely a mile away, making this an easy morning walk before breakfast. Cambridgeshire Lakes is further out but worth considering if you want more facilities alongside your exploration of local history. Spring and autumn are best - summer brings flies and crowds, winter can feel a bit bleak even for a grim Victorian lock-up.
