Eastland Shaw

The woodland around Eastland Shaw, just outside Battle, is proper Sussex - dense, dark in places, and the sort of forest that feels older than it probably is. You're walking through mixed broadleaf and conifer, with decent paths that don't demand specialist kit. It's the kind of place where you notice things: fallen logs rotting back into the earth, patches of bluebells if you time it right in spring, and the constant soft noise of birds you can't quite identify.

This works best for walkers who want a couple of hours without fanfare. Families with older kids will enjoy it; younger ones might find the sameness of trees tedious after forty minutes. There's genuine forest here rather than manicured parkland - muddy in winter, properly green in summer. The nearest town, Battle, is close enough that you could combine this with a proper morning out, though Eastland Shaw itself isn't a destination that demands half your day.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Beech Estate is just 2.5 miles away, or Coghurst Hall a bit further - this makes a natural morning walk before breakfast. Seven Acre Woods, nearer still, might scratch a similar itch if the weather's poor. No visitor facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water and come with realistic expectations. It's a straightforward woodland walk through Sussex greenery. Not dramatic. Not Instagram-worthy. Just solid forest walking on your doorstep if you're camping locally.
