The woods around Horsham are proper Surrey - dense, manageable, and easy to get lost in without actually getting lost. Eastgate Wood delivers exactly what it says on the tin: a straightforward forest walk that doesn't demand much but rewards a bit of effort. You get beech trees, the occasional clearing, and that satisfying crunch underfoot that only an English woodland in autumn provides.

It's the sort of place that suits walkers more than thrill-seekers. Families with young children will manage fine for an hour or so, though it's not dramatic enough to hold attention beyond that unless you're specifically teaching them to spot woodland birds or identify trees. Older kids doing forest school projects would find it useful enough. The real draw is the peace - on a weekday morning, you might not see another soul, which counts for something these days.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's no obvious visitor infrastructure, so don't expect car parks or facilities. It's the kind of woods you simply turn up to and walk into. Allow an hour minimum if you're actually exploring rather than just cutting through to Horsham town centre.

If you're based at one of the nearby sites - Riverside Farm or Sussex Topiary Campsite are both within three miles - this works as a decent leg-stretcher between proper days out. The Horsham area has better attractions for a full day, but Eastgate Wood fills a gap nicely for a morning ramble.
