East Walled Garden

The walled garden at Bridge of Dun is one of those places that creeps up on you. You're wandering the quiet lanes near Aberdeenshire and suddenly there it is - proper Victorian kitchen garden, enclosed by red stone walls that have been doing their job for a couple of centuries. The East section is the one worth your time, with box hedging, fruit trees trained flat against the masonry, and those long beds where they'd have grown everything from turnips to gooseberries.

It's peaceful, which matters. Most visitors will be passing through rather than making a pilgrimage, but if you're gardening types or just fancy an hour of quiet wandering, it repays a proper look. The scale is manageable - not an exhausting hike - and you get a genuine sense of how a proper Victorian estate functioned. Bring a camera for the structural detail; the walls alone are worth photographing.

Practically speaking, it's free to wander around, though conditions and access can be weather-dependent in the Scottish Highlands - check before you drive out. Allow forty minutes to an hour if you're taking it in properly. If you're pitched at Dovecot Caravan Park, just four miles away, this makes an easy afternoon detour without much petrol spent. Better still if you're combining it with other walks in the area - it's compact enough not to derail a broader day out, but interesting enough that you won't feel you've wasted the stop.
