East Town Park

East Town Park sits just outside Braintree, a proper Essex nature reserve that punches above its weight. The place sprawls across enough ground to actually feel like you've escaped, with a decent mix of woodland, open grassland, and ponds that attract all manner of birds and insects through the seasons.

Walkers get the most from this one. The paths are well-maintained and you can spend a good couple of hours wandering without feeling rushed, though it's not so vast that you'll get lost. Birdwatchers will have their binoculars out within minutes - I counted at least a dozen species on an afternoon visit, and the ponds attract everything from herons to common newts depending on the time of year. Families with young kids will manage an hour or so before attention starts to wane, though the open spaces are decent for letting them run about.

The reserve works brilliantly as a morning or afternoon break if you're based at nearby Readers Field Glamping. That five-mile distance means you're not far from nature, but you can be back for proper facilities and a decent cup of tea without messing about. Spring and early summer are the sweet spot weather-wise, though autumn colours here are worth a detour too.

I'd check ahead for any restrictions or facilities before you head out, as I couldn't pin down opening hours or admission fees with certainty. Worth the trip from Braintree town centre though, especially if you're after a bit of peace and quiet.
