East Pond

East Pond sits quietly on the outskirts of Gloucester, the kind of water that locals know about but tourists often miss. It's a proper freshwater lake, ringed by woodland and open enough that you can actually see across it without feeling boxed in by trees. The walk around the perimeter takes a decent hour or so, depending on how often you stop to watch the waterfowl or scan the water for pike.

Birdwatchers will get the most from it. The variety changes seasonally - winter brings in the serious numbers, while spring gets loud with breeding activity. Casual walkers and families with kids will find the going pleasant but unremarkable; there's no café, no facilities to speak of, and it won't keep anyone entertained for more than an afternoon. That's not a criticism, mind. Sometimes a lake is just a lake, and that's enough.

The surrounding area is flat and pastoral, which makes it a sensible leg-stretch from either Baldwin's Brook Glamping or Apple Orchard Camping - both are within easy reach and decent quality by the look of them. If you're based at one of those spots and the weather's decent, East Pond works well as a morning walk before you head into Gloucester proper. Pack binoculars if you've got them, bring a thermos because there's nowhere to get a tea, and don't expect to queue for anything. It's the sort of place you visit because you're curious, not because someone told you to.
