East Lomond Mast Car Park

The mast car park sits high on East Lomond, offering views across Fife that stretch all the way to the Forth. It's not a destination in itself - the real draw is the walk up or the panorama once you've parked. On a clear day you can see Edinburgh, the Pentland Hills, and across to Perthshire. On a grey one, you'll see cloud.

This is walker territory, properly. The summit car park saves you the steep final push if your legs aren't keen, though getting there involves a decent climb from Glenrothes. Families with young children might find the drive the main event - the views from the car are decent enough without the hike. But if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Balbirnie is closest at 3.6 miles, or Wild Goose Glamping if you fancy something more upmarket - a morning run up here beats sitting in your van.

The mast itself is industrial, nothing pretty about it, but it doesn't spoil the view. Bring a windproof whatever the forecast says. The exposed ridge catches weather that looks fine in Glenrothes. Allow an hour for the drive from town and another for messing about at the top - grabbing coffee from a flask, getting the phone camera working, that sort of thing.

Free parking, no facilities to speak of. Go early on weekends or you'll be hunting for a space. Worth it if you're in the area for the parks, less so if you're making a special trip.
