East Links Montrose

The coastal path at East Links winds through one of Scotland's most important sand dune systems, and it's far less crowded than you'd expect given what's on offer. A proper working nature reserve rather than a theme-park version of one, this stretch near Montrose draws serious birdwatchers in spring and autumn - waders, terns, and the occasional rarer migrant if you time it right. The dunes themselves are substantial, anchored by marram grass and wild flowers that shift colour through the seasons. Walking here feels genuinely wild without being awkward or dangerous. You can loop a couple of miles along the beach edge or venture inland through the dune slacks where freshwater pools attract amphibians and dragonflies. Most people spend an hour to ninety minutes here, though dedicated naturalists could easily stretch that to a full morning. The reserve is free and open year-round, though April through May and August through September offer the best birdwatching. Winter brings grey skies and genuine wind - not unpleasant, but come prepared. If you're based at St Cyrus Holiday Park just five miles south, this makes an excellent morning excursion before heading back for lunch. It's quieter than St Cyrus itself and offers something altogether different from the busier holiday atmosphere. The terrain is flat and accessible, making it manageable for families with younger walkers, though there's little shelter if weather turns.
