East Lake

The water at East Lake sits proper still on a good day, reflecting the Dorset sky like glass. It's a freshwater lake just outside Swanage, the sort of place that catches you off guard if you're wandering the clifftop paths and suddenly find yourself at the water's edge.

You won't find much in the way of facilities here - no cafes, no hire shops, nothing touristy about it. What you get instead is peace. Walkers love it because the routes around the lake are gentle and well-trodden. Birdwatchers turn up with binoculars and notebooks. It's the kind of spot where you can sit for twenty minutes listening to nothing but water and wind, which honestly feels rarer by the year.

Families with young kids might find an hour here enough unless they're keen on spotting wildlife or skimming stones. The paths are straightforward, no steep climbs to worry about. If you're camping at Ulwell Holiday Park just down the road, or staying at Swanage Bay View, East Lake makes a solid morning's walk without needing to plan transport - you can be there in minutes.

Timing-wise, go early if you want to avoid even the modest summer crowds. Spring is lovely when the birds are nesting. Winter feels particularly quiet, which suits the place. It won't blow your mind - this isn't Lulworth Cove - but it's genuine and unpretentious. Worth the detour if you're in the area.
