East Hanney Recreation Ground

The fields around East Hanney, just outside Witney, don't announce themselves loudly. There's no visitor centre, no marked trails with interpretation boards - just open grassland and woodland that locals have walked for years. It's a working nature reserve, the kind of place where you might spot skylarks in summer or winter thrushes if you're lucky.

What you get here is genuine countryside without the pageantry. The walking is straightforward: gentle paths through the meadows, patches of scrub and trees along the edges, proper open skies. Spring brings bluebells and early marsh orchids. In autumn, the place transforms with migrating birds. You won't find facilities or crowds, which is precisely the point.

Walkers will get the most from it - people who enjoy watching wildlife without needing structured routes or coffee shops. Families with older kids who can manage a decent walk will find it rewarding. Photography types come here regularly for the birds and light. Spend an hour or two, depending on your pace and how many times you stop to watch.

It works well as a break if you're staying at Lincoln Farm Park Partnership, about six miles away. The closest proper base is Witney itself, though accommodation options in this part of Oxfordshire are limited if you want something closer. Best visited in spring or early autumn when bird activity peaks, though it's pleasant year-round if you don't mind muddy conditions after rain.
