East Girt Hill

The walk up East Girt Hill is modest by Scottish standards, but don't let that fool you - the Renfrewshire moorland can surprise you. Rising above Lochwinnoch, it's the sort of place where you get proper views without needing climbing boots or a map reader. The summit's a decent vantage point across the Lowlands, and on a clear day you can see what you've come for.

This is walker's territory. Not a major undertaking - most people will spend an hour getting up and down - but it's solid moorland walking with actual paths. Families with kids who've done a few hills will find it rewarding enough, though younger children might find the gradients a bit relentless. The real appeal is the solitude. You won't be queuing for photos here.

Lochwinnoch's just down the road, which makes it an easy addition to a longer walk or a day exploring the area. If you're staying at The Pods at Auchenhean - a cracking little spot about four miles away - this fits perfectly into a Renfrewshire walking break. The area's got more rolling terrain than dramatic peaks, so managing your expectations pays off. It's not Instagram material, but it's honest moorland, and that's worth something.

Go early morning if you can. The light's better, and you'll have the place largely to yourself. No facilities at the summit, so bring water. Free, obviously - there's nothing up there to charge for.
