East Devon National Landscape

The cliffs along East Devon's coastline are the real story here - a geological drama written in red sandstone and greensand that you can read as you walk. This isn't a single monument or visitor centre, but rather a designated landscape that stretches across rolling countryside and dramatic coastal stretches, best experienced on foot rather than from a car park.

From Seaton, you're well-positioned to explore it properly. The South West Coast Path runs through the area and gives you the full geological experience - the colours alone are worth the walk, especially in low winter light when the reds absolutely glow. The landscape includes the Axe Estuary and inland valleys that feel surprisingly wild for South Devon.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate that you're walking through rocks that tell a 250-million-year story, but honestly, you don't need to be a geology enthusiast to find it compelling. Families with capable walkers will find plenty to explore without needing organised attractions - the cliffs, the coves, the estuary paths all hold interest for a good few hours. Young children might find it a bit samey after a mile or so, though.

It's free to roam, though you'll need decent boots and weather sense. Allow half a day minimum if you're doing proper walking. Winter and early spring offer the clearest visibility and fewest crowds. Based at Oakdown Touring and Holiday Caravan Park just a few miles away, you could easily spend a couple of days here without driving anywhere else - the South West Coast Path is right on your doorstep.
