Earls Hill

The walk up Earls Hill rewards you with views across Renfrewshire that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's a proper little peak, nothing too demanding - the sort of hill that gives you the satisfaction of actual summit success without requiring specialist kit or a dawn start.

From Lochwinnoch, the approach is straightforward enough. The climb itself is steep in patches but mercifully short, and you're up and down in under two hours if you keep a steady pace. What makes it worth the effort is the vantage point. On a good day you can pick out the Clyde Valley, Goat Fell across on Arran, and the rough shape of the Southern Uplands rolling away southward. The view genuinely shifts with the weather and season - I've seen it grey and moody, golden in late afternoon sun, and once wrapped in cloud so thick you couldn't see five metres ahead.

Families with reasonably confident walkers will find it manageable. It's not the sort of walk where bored kids will kick up a fuss halfway, assuming they're over about eight or nine. For serious hikers it's a warm-up rather than the main event, but that's precisely why it works as part of a broader park holiday in the area. Pair it with The Pods at Auchenhean - a decent overnight option only a few miles away - and you've got a solid afternoon out without overcommitting your time. The Lowlands around here deserve more attention than they get.
