Dysart Park

South of Grantham, this modest nature reserve does exactly what it says on the tin - gives you a proper walk through some genuine woodland without any faffing about. It's the sort of place where you might actually spot something interesting rather than just trudge past manicured paths.

The reserve itself is small enough that you won't need a full day here, but it's ideal if you're staying at Wagtail Country Park down the road and want to stretch your legs without driving off somewhere grander. The woodland's straightforward: good for spotting birds, the occasional roe deer if you're lucky, and it's dead easy on the knees compared to some of the longer walks in the area. Bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing.

Access appears free, though opening times aren't published - so check before you head out, especially in winter. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're moving slowly and stopping to look around properly. It's the kind of place that works best in spring or early summer when the woodland's actually alive with noise, rather than January when it's just you, the mud, and the occasional jogger.

Not a destination in itself, but paired with Wagtail - which is only a couple of miles away - it makes a sensible half-morning outing. Families with young kids might find it a bit limited, but anyone who just wants a quiet woodland walk without the National Trust crowds will find it worth the detour.
