Durness Milleneum Cairn

The stone cairn marking the millennium sits on the edge of Durness with views across to the north coast that'll stop you mid-stride. Built to commemorate the year 2000, it's a modest affair - not the sort of thing you'd plan a trip around - but if you're staying at Sango Sands Oasis nearby, it's a pleasant fifteen-minute walk to clear your head.

What you get is basically a well-built pile of local stone with information about the area carved into plaques. The real draw is the location itself. Standing here, you're genuinely at the edge of things - the landscape is properly wild, and the light quality in the Highlands makes even a simple monument feel significant.

Walkers will appreciate it as a waypoint rather than a destination. The moorland around Durness rewards exploration, and this cairn gives you a reason to head out and discover the surrounding tracks and views. It's free to visit, takes about ten minutes to walk round, and works best on a clear day when you can actually see across the water.

If you're based at the caravan park for a few days, slot this in alongside a proper walk to Smoo Cave or a drive to Balnakeil Beach. Don't come here expecting grandeur - it's a community landmark with character, nothing more. The Highlands have plenty of bigger, older monuments, but this one has the advantage of being genuinely local and easy to reach.
