Durlston Country Park and National Nature Reserve

The cliffs at Durlston are proper dramatic - striped golden and grey, they tower above the sea just south of Swanage. This country park and nature reserve spreads across 280 acres, mixing coastal walks, grassland, and a working stone quarry that's been there since Victorian times. You can walk the clifftop paths and actually see the layers of geology laid bare in the rock face, which is genuinely fascinating if you're into that sort of thing.

The main draw is the walking. A decent loop takes you round the headland with views across the bay, and on a clear day it's worth the leg work. The quarry itself is still operating, so there's something oddly compelling about watching modern industry alongside nature reserves. Families with younger kids might find the walk a bit long - it's not a quick circuit - but teenagers and keen walkers will get proper value from it. The grassland supports orchids and rare butterflies, so spring and early summer are your best bets for spotting things.

It's free to wander the park itself, though parking may charge depending on when you visit. Allow two to three hours minimum if you want to do the main loop properly. It works well as a morning or afternoon break from your caravan or lodge, and it's the sort of place that genuinely improves on a return visit once you know the paths.
