Duporth Beach

You get proper golden sand at Duporth, backed by pine trees that actually block the wind on choppy days. It's a working beach - fishing boats still operate from here, and it's all the better for feeling like a place people use rather than just visit.

The appeal lies in its quiet straightforwardness. No amusement arcades, no taffy stalls, just sand, sea, and the occasional cormorant. Families with young children will appreciate the relatively sheltered setup and the fact it never gets rammed. Older kids might find it a touch dull unless they're into rockpooling or launching kayaks - there's a launch spot here if you've brought your own.

It's free, obviously. Allow an hour or two depending on the tide - at high water there's less beach, which actually concentrates people and makes it feel busier than it is. Come early morning for the best light and to beat any afternoon swell that can kick up.

Geographically, you're minutes from Charlestown, which has cafes and a decent harbour to explore when you tire of the beach. If you're staying at Pentewan Sands Holiday Park just down the road, Duporth works as a fine alternative when you fancy a change of scenery. It lacks the facilities of busier Cornish beaches, but that's rather the point.
