Dunskey Castle

The ruins of Dunskey Castle sit on a rocky headland just outside Stranraer, commanding views across Luce Bay that feel genuinely dramatic on a clear day. It's not much to look at from a distance - more a collection of crumbled stone walls than an imposing fortress - but that's partly what makes it interesting. Built in the 16th century, it's seen a fair bit of action over the centuries, and walking around the remains gives you a proper sense of how these old strongholds were positioned for defence and control.

You can access it on foot from nearby, and it's the sort of place that appeals most to history enthusiasts and walkers rather than families after a day's entertainment. The walk itself is pleasant enough, with good views developing as you approach. Allow 45 minutes to an hour here, including the walk and a proper poke around the ruins. There's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, so you'll need to do a bit of your own detective work if you want to understand what you're looking at.

If you're staying at Sands of Luce Holiday Park - about 6 miles away - it's a worthwhile detour. Combines nicely with coastal walks in the area and gives you a sense of the region's medieval past without the crowds you'd get at bigger attractions. Go when the weather's decent; bleak and windswept is atmospheric but not comfortable for lingering.
