Dunnet Head Viewpoint

The drive up to Dunnet Head feels like you're running out of mainland Scotland - because you are. This is the northernmost point of the British mainland, a proper end-of-the-world sort of place that sits about four miles northeast of Thurso. The viewpoint itself is fairly straightforward: a car park, a short walk, and then you're standing on cliffs that drop away to the Pentland Firth below, with the Orkney Islands sitting across the water like they're close enough to swim to.

On a clear day - and this is the operative phrase in the Highlands - you get views that stretch for miles. The light does something odd up here, especially in summer when it barely gets dark. Seabirds wheel about the cliffs, and if you're lucky you might spot puffins or razorbills nesting in the rock face. The walking is minimal, which actually works in its favour. You're not here to hike; you're here to stand at the edge and appreciate that you've reached somewhere genuinely remote.

It's free, takes about an hour all in, and works well if you're based at Little Croft Highlands just outside Thurso. Weather is the limiting factor - wind comes in off the water with real teeth, and mist can roll in fast. Go on a bright morning if you can. History buffs might be disappointed that there's precious little interpretation on site, but for the sheer sense of standing somewhere significant on the map, it delivers.
