Dunkirk Mill Museum

The moment you walk into Dunkirk Mill, you're standing in a proper working textile factory - not some sanitised recreation, but the actual place where cloth was made for centuries. It's a converted mill just outside Stroud, where the Stroud Textile Trust has preserved the machinery, the looms, and the whole rhythm of what this industry meant to the Cotswolds.

You get to see the full process: raw fibres coming in one end, finished cloth rolling out the other. The looms are the real draw - massive, intricate things that still operate, and watching them run is genuinely hypnotic. For anyone interested in industrial heritage or textile history, this is the real deal. Kids might find it engaging for an hour or so, particularly if there's a demonstration on, but it's not a day-long attraction.

The museum is free to enter, which is brilliant value. Allow 90 minutes if you're thorough, less if you're just passing through. The nearest decent base is Stroud itself, which has proper cafes and shops. If you're camping nearby - Tobacconist Farm is closest at under two miles away - this makes a solid half-day diversion alongside exploring the Cotswold Water Park or other local walks.

Timing-wise, check ahead before you visit. It's not open every day, so don't turn up assuming you'll get in. Summer weekends are your safest bet. The building itself, set beside the River Frome, is worth the visit for industrial architecture alone.
