The MV Watchful sits in Hartlepool's historic quay, one of the actual small boats that answered the call during the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. Walking aboard this cramped fishing vessel, you get a genuine sense of what those skippers faced - the narrow wheelhouse, the basic equipment, the sheer audacity of civilian crews crossing the Channel under fire in something barely bigger than a modern fishing trawler.
