Duneight Motte & Bailey

The earthwork mound rises abruptly from the flat landscape near Hillsborough, looking rather like someone's dumped a enormous teaspoon of earth and called it a castle. This is Duneight Motte and Bailey, a Norman fortification that's been sitting here since the 12th century, gradually subsiding into the grass.

What you actually get is two bits of raised ground - the motte (the main mound) and the bailey (the flattened enclosure beside it). There's no stonework, no keep, no dramatic ruins. What there is, is the raw skeleton of medieval power. Someone built this to control the landscape, and even now, 900 years later, you feel it. The views across the rolling countryside toward Hillsborough are proper good, especially if the light's decent.

Walkers will find it worthwhile as a brief detour rather than a destination. Twenty minutes max to clamber up, have a look around, and understand what you're seeing. History buffs will get more from it if they've swotted up beforehand - it's the sort of place where knowing the context matters more than what's physically in front of you. Kids might find it a bit dull unless they're into pretending it's a fortress.

It's free and accessible, sitting in the open landscape with no facilities. Pair it with Lakeside View Caravan Park four miles away if you're basing yourself in the area. Worth a morning's wandering, but don't expect grandeur.
