Duneight Motte and Bailey

The earthwork rises abruptly from the surrounding fields near Hillsborough - a proper Anglo-Norman motte and bailey that's been sitting here since the 12th century, doing its thing without fanfare. You're looking at the raised mound (the motte) where a wooden keep once stood, with the defensive bailey spreading out below it, all ringed by what's left of the original ditch. It's the bones of medieval military architecture, full stop.

Most visitors are either local walkers who know the area or archaeology types who've made it their mission to track down every Norman fortification in Ulster. Kids find it reasonably interesting for ten minutes - there's scrambling potential on the mound itself, though it can get muddy. The view out across the countryside from the top is genuinely decent if the weather's on your side.

Access is straightforward and free. There's no visitor centre or interpretation board worth mentioning, so you're essentially reading the landscape itself. That means come prepared to use your imagination a bit - this isn't a polished heritage attraction.

If you're based at Lakeside View Caravan Park nearby, it's worth the short drive as part of a broader potter around the Lisburn and Castlereagh area. Pair it with Hillsborough's town centre and you've got yourself a morning. Don't expect to spend more than 30 minutes here, but if you're genuinely interested in Norman settlement patterns in Ireland, it rewards closer looking.
