Dundry Down

The walk up Dundry Down from Bristol's southern edge takes about forty minutes, and it's genuinely one of the better half-day excursions if you're based anywhere near the city. You get proper views across the Somerset levels and back towards Bristol itself - nothing dramatic, but on a clear day it's the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people lived here centuries ago.

The hill itself is modest by any serious standard, but that's rather the point. There's a tower at the top, early Victorian, which marks the spot where old beacon fires once burned. You can't go inside it, but the structure itself is interesting enough to photograph. The walk's gentle enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the lack of dramatic scenery a bit dull after the first twenty minutes.

What really works about Dundry is timing. Go late afternoon when the light gets golden across the levels, and you'll see why walkers keep coming back. Early morning's equally good if you're the type to be up before breakfast. Avoid midday in summer - it's exposed and there's bugger all shade.

You're close enough for an easy morning walk without needing to drive far, but far enough that Dundry Down feels like proper countryside rather than a suburban ramble. Free to visit, of course. Allow two hours there and back if you're taking it slowly.
