Dunan Breac, dun site

A grassy mound rising from the Argyll landscape near Tarbert, Dunan Breac is an Iron Age dun - a fortified dwelling that once housed someone of considerable status. You're looking at the remains of what would have been a stone-built roundhouse, probably dating back two thousand years or more. The earthworks are still clear enough to read: the defensive banks and ditches that protected whoever lived here from whatever threats existed in ancient Argyll.

There's not much to do here in the conventional sense. You walk to it, stand on it, look at the landscape the inhabitants would have surveyed, and that's broadly it. But if you're interested in Iron Age Scotland - how people actually lived, where they chose to build, what they valued defensively - this is the real thing. No interpretive centre, no reconstructions, just the archaeology itself. It rewards a bit of patience and imagination.

Best suited to walkers and history enthusiasts rather than young children, who might struggle with the 'nothing happens here' aspect. Allow an hour maximum, including the walk to reach it. The site is free to visit and accessible year-round, though winter mud can be testing.

Dunan Breac works as a quieter half-morning, something you can tick off without any fuss. It's the sort of place that stays with you longer than you'd expect.
