Dun Coille Struy, broch site

You'll find yourself standing in a Highland clearing where a Bronze Age broch once dominated the landscape. Dun Coille Struy is what remains - mostly earthworks and stone, but if you know what you're looking at, the circular defensive tower's footprint tells a proper story. It's near Beauly, in country where the Highlands start to show their teeth.

The site itself won't take long. Walk the perimeter, spot the entrance markers, maybe spend twenty minutes photographing the stones and views. Archaeology buffs will get more out of it than casual visitors - you need to use your imagination here since there's no reconstruction or interpretation boards. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming unless they're into Bronze Age settlements; it's not a playground.

What makes it worthwhile is the walk in. The landscape around here is moody and empty, which somehow makes ancient ruins feel more real. Come on a clear day and the views toward the surrounding hills justify the detour. On a drizzly afternoon, you might question the trip.

Pair it with a walk through the nearby glens rather than treating it as a standalone visit. Allow an hour total including the approach.
