Dumb Lough

Dumb Lough sits quietly on the outskirts of Hillsborough, a proper little stretch of water that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a visit if you're staying in the area. It's the sort of place locals know well but tourists often miss - a freshwater lake ringed by reeds and open grassland, ideal for a walk without the crowds you'd find at more famous spots.

The water itself is calm and reflective, especially first thing in the morning. Birdwatchers tend to get the most from it - coots, mallards, and herons are regular sights. If you're staying at Lakeside View Caravan Park just down the road, it's an easy potter for an hour or so, though don't expect dramatic scenery or facilities. There's parking near the edge and access to the shoreline is straightforward.

It works well as part of a broader wander around Hillsborough itself, rather than a destination in its own right. The town has proper character - castle, heritage shops, good pubs - so you can pair a lough visit with a proper afternoon. Bring wellies if it's been wet; the ground gets boggy. Kids will be entertained by spotting water birds, but you won't need more than forty minutes here unless you're seriously into ornithology.
