Duddingston Kirk

The Kirk sits on a slight rise above Duddingston village, just outside Musselburgh, looking out over the Firth of Forth. It's one of those churches that catches you off-guard - older than you'd expect, quieter than you'd imagine. The building dates back to the 12th century, though what you see now is mostly 17th-century work, all rough harled walls and a stubby tower that's seen better centuries.

Walking around the exterior tells more stories than many visitors bother to look for. The graveyard's genuinely atmospheric - not in a Hollywood way, just genuinely old. There's a real sense of place here, especially on a clear morning when you can see across to Fife.

Inside, it's austere in that proper Scottish kirk way. The box pews are original, which is rarer than you'd think, and they give the whole space an intimate, slightly creaky feel. The light through those old windows is lovely. You're looking at maybe twenty minutes inside, longer if you're into the details of ecclesiastical architecture.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from a proper visit - this is genuine medieval church, not a tourist-friendly experience. Families with restless kids might find it brief. The location makes it worth combining with a walk around Duddingston itself or a wider East Lothian exploration. If you're camped at Drummohr, it's a straightforward drive nearby.
