Duddas Wood

The woodland floor at Duddas Wood is soft underfoot, carpeted with leaf litter and moss that squelches pleasantly after rain. It's a proper local nature reserve just outside Stafford, the kind of place where you'll spot wood warblers in spring and find yourself genuinely lost in the trees for an hour without meaning to. The paths wind through mixed woodland - oak, birch, and conifer - with enough variation to keep a walk interesting rather than repetitive.

This is best suited to walkers and anyone with a genuine interest in woodland wildlife. Kids will manage here if they're the type to hunt for insects and fallen branches rather than needing a playground. You're looking at allowing ninety minutes to two hours for a decent circuit, depending on your pace and how often you stop to look up at the canopy. Go in spring when the birds are loud and the ground cover is lush, or autumn when the light filters through differently.

As a day-stop during a park holiday in the area, it slots in well - Ladybirch Motorhome Park is barely a mile away, making it an easy walk to clear your head between site activities. High Onn Holiday Park, a few miles further out, would also work as a base. The reserve won't take your whole day, but it's the kind of local woodland that restores something and doesn't demand much in return. Free access, no facilities that we could find, so bring water.
