Drummonds Hill

The walk up Drummonds Hill is steep enough to make you work for the views, but not so brutal that you'll regret it halfway. From Lanark, it's a proper climb through moorland that opens up to some genuinely lovely sight-lines across the Lowlands once you've summited. On a clear day you can see for miles - the kind of vista that makes you understand why people settled in this part of Scotland.

It's the sort of place that rewards walkers more than casual visitors. You're not getting a café or visitor centre here, just good clean air and the satisfaction of having earned the panorama. Families with older kids who don't mind a steep path will do fine; younger ones might find it a bit of a slog without the reward of a summit structure or play area. Most people allow an hour or so for the round trip depending on fitness, though you could easily extend it if you're exploring the surrounding moorland.

Free to access, obviously, which is always welcome. It's the kind of walk that gives you that genuine Scottish Lowlands feeling without needing to drive hours into the Highlands. The weather can turn quickly up here, so pick a decent day and bring a jacket.
